Powered by Hope Medal

This week I am incredibly proud to share the exciting news that I launched my foundation, Powered by Hope. I’ll plan on sharing more information as the foundation grows and takes shape, but I’m happy where it is already heading.

Around a year ago, I began thinking about specific ways to provide encouragement to cancer patients who are undergoing treatment. I know how scary and overwhelming that experience can be at times – that it is filled with ups and downs, good times and bad. I also know how important it is to have support and hope – you can’t go it alone.

With this in mind, I began thinking through the design of a medal that could be presented to patients as a reminder that we are all in this together and that hope is real. I wanted the Powered by Hope medal to support all cancer patients, so the design shows a ribbon with the many colors that represent a range of cancer support efforts – from pink (breast cancer) to blue (colon cancer).

Powered by Hope Medal

I have embarked on this journey with two fellow cancer survivors, Brian and Alissa. Together we wanted to present the Powered by Hope medals to patients seeking treatment at Siteman Cancer Center with our doctors, Dr. Tan and Dr. Bartlett. It is hard to put into words how it felt to present the two patients with the medal – it was moving, it was uplifting and it was everything I hoped it would be and so much more than I imagined.

After presenting the first patient with the Powered by Hope medal, we received our chemo treatment together, giving us the chance to further connect.

Thank you to everyone who helped start the foundation and with the medal design. A website page is being created that will offer more information in the future, but in the meantime please contact me directly if you have any questions.

Remember to keep the hope alive! Hope is how ordinary people endure.

Pedal the Cause

I invite you and your family and friends to join  team Powered by Hope for the annual Pedal the Cause St. Louis event on September 27-28 to support cancer research. There are so many exciting ways you can get involved – whether you plan on riding in the race, spinning or riding virtually –  and 100% of donations will go directly to accelerating cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Our goal is a world without cancer. Last year the Powered by Hope team had more than 150 riders and raised $110,000.

Since Pedal the Cause began in 2009, they have donated more than $4.2 million to cancer research. In 2012 alone, Pedal the Cause had 1,850 riders, 777 volunteers, and 15,000+ donors, and together, raised $2.057 million dollars for cancer research.

For more information about Pedal the Cause, how you can participate and for registration, check out the website: stlouis.pedalthecause.org. To sign up for the Powered by Hope team, you can go here.

Thank you to everyone who has already registered or donated! Your support truly makes a difference. Be sure to follow along on the blog and on Twitter and Facebook for updates as we gear up for this amazing event.
